In this article, I cover the main services needed and explain the role each service plays with regards to your online website.
First Service – Web Hosting
This can be compared to your home. Just like you have a home in condo or estate, your website files also needs a proper place to reside.
You might be wondering as to why you can’t host your website directly from your home computer. A good analogy to this would be like you living under the bridge or in the park and not in a proper home.
Your home in a condo is connected properly with electrical wiring, plumping, piped in water and other infrastructure. It also has a proper address where people can connect with you. All this is not possible if you live under different bridges every day.
This is the exact same reason why your website needs to reside in a computer (usually referred to as a web server), which is properly connected to the Internet backbone. Web servers are like condos in the internet world as they come loaded with Internet specific applications.
Second Service Domain Name.
This is your website address. Just as you have a specific address where you can be reached, domain name is your website’s specific address on the internet. It will look something like this “http:// your-business-name .com/”
One can register a domain name through a domain name registrar. When applying for a domain name, you have to take note of the extension (the 3 letter abbreviation at the end). Common extensions are .com for Company, .org for an Organization, .net for a Network, etc…
Once a domain name is already registered, it cannot be used by anyone else. The only exception to this is in the extension. For example if the name yourbusiness.com is not available, you can still try for yourbusiness.net.
Third Service – Website Design
Designing a website now is a far cry from a decade back. Back then it was quite technical and more often than not, you had to engage the services of a web designing company for this. Now days, designing a website is as simple as purchasing a template and building your website around a theme. If all this sounds alien to you, it would be better to engage the services of a Web Design Company.
